Routes
The Botsoela Waterfall and Bushman Paintings (5-6hrs)
Hiking (6-7hrs), Pony Trek (5hrs) 550m - Ascent/DescentThe Botsoela Waterfall (4hrs)
Hiking &. Pony Trek (4hrs) - 340m elevationThe first 30 minutes is flat along the top of the valley. Pass the Handicraft Centre, pass Makhetheng Primary School on the right and about 300m further on, take the left fork to the village of Malealea, (see map) overlooking the Botsoela river. The next 15 minutes is a descent down to the stream. Head north, and follow upstream for about 45 minutes along a path next to the stream at the bottom of the valley with some boulder hopping every now and then to criss cross the stream.
The horses then take an adventurous path up the mountain which is very narrow in places and it is recommended you get off the horse at this point, but the guides will stop and let you know when is the right time to get off.
At the top of the Waterfall you will get off the horse and taken on a 15 minute guided hike down to the Waterfall.
Those who are feeling hot and adventurous can go for a dip under the waterfall. There is a nice picnic area at the waterfall where you can eat lunch. (Lunch packs can be ordered at the lodge, preferably the day before the hike. It's best to order the lunch packs in the evening after arrival).
Caution: Beware of wet & slippery rocks.
After you get back on the horse at the top, the route does a loop around the waterfall so you can view it from the top and then you go down a fairly steep path to join the river again. Here you follow the same route back to the lodge.
The Bushman Paintings (3hrs)
Hiking & Pony Trekking (3hrs) - 250m Ascent/DescentHidden within the rugged terrain of the Makhaleng River Valley lie three remarkable caves adorned with ancient Bushman paintings. These rock art sites provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and traditions of the San people, who once roamed these lands as hunter-gatherers.
Two of the caves are relatively easy to access, making them ideal for those looking for a moderate yet rewarding hike. The third cave, however, is a true test of endurance and agility, requiring a steep and challenging scramble. Only those who consider themselves fit and adventurous should attempt this climb, always under the guidance of an experienced local guide.
The paintings themselves are well hidden, making them incredibly difficult to locate without expert knowledge. Additionally, venturing off the path can be dangerous, with steep inclines and rocky terrain posing risks to unprepared hikers. For this reason, it is strongly advised to stick to the designated route and follow your guide’s instructions closely.
Fortunately, our knowledgeable and experienced guides will not only ensure your safety but also enrich your experience by explaining the meanings behind the paintings. They will interpret the symbols, figures, and stories depicted on the rock faces, providing insight into the spiritual and everyday lives of the San people. Through their explanations, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the significance of these ancient artworks and the culture that created them.
Visiting the Bushman paintings in the Makhaleng River Valley is more than just a hike—it’s an opportunity to step back in time and connect with the region’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you choose the easier routes or challenge yourself with the more strenuous climb, the experience is sure to leave you with a deeper appreciation for the ancient artistry and the breathtaking natural beauty of the valley.
How to get there
By Horse
From Malealea Lodge it takes about an hour to a point where you have to get off the horse. At this point the Pony Trek guide will take care of the horses and you will be guided to the Bushman Paintings by a guide from the local village. From here drop down into the gorge where the path descends to the Echo Cave. (Test out the Echo cave for amazing echos!).This hiking excursion takes approximately an hour to complete before returning to the horses, where you will settle up and ride back to the lodge. The journey is as breathtaking as it is historical, with the valley’s untouched landscapes providing a stunning backdrop to these ancient artworks.
On Foot
The hike takes 3 hrs. We highly recommend you take a guide. You follow the same route as the Pony Trek. You will follow the road down to the Handicraft Centre, turn right into the fields and follow the path to the village of Molefe. From here drop down into the gorge where the path descends to the Echo Cave.(Test out the Echo cave for amazing echos!). Continue along the path for about 100m, then descend down to the San paintings on the left. Your guide will lead you to the caves. There is a 250m ascent back to the lodge from the paintings. Just take it slow and breathe in the mountain air and the peaceful surroundings.
Top of Gorge (2hrs)
Hiking & Pony Trek - 2hrsNo pony treks are flat in Lesotho, but if you are a beginner or just want a beautiful scenic trek, and you think you can sit for two hours on a horse, this is the trek for you. You will go out the gates of Malealea Lodge and go past some shops and houses on the main road you came in on. You will leave this road quite soon and climb a small hill, heading off towards the Pitseng Gorge. The horses can not go down into the gorge so this trek traverses around the edges of the Pitseng Gorge, with some impressive views of the river and sandstone formations below. In the distance you will see the Thaba Putsoa Mountain Range and when you get to a point overlooking the Makhaleng River Valley the route turns sharply and you trek through some more Basotho Villages and make your way back up to Malealea Lodge.
